Workshop: A Report To The Public (9:00 AM)

Title: "A Report to the Public"

Date: May 15, 2010

Time: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Location: The History Center, 526 Second Ave., SE Cedar Rapids, IA

The morning session will be a series of case studies illustrating how six Corridor communities have been dealing with a variety of emergency situations that threatened or destroyed historic structures or areas in the past two years.

Commission or staff members from Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Marion, Mount Vernon and Linn County will describe how natural disasters or fires have impacted specific historic structures or areas. Cities along the Red Cedar River have been dealing with the great flood of 2008 and Iowa City also suffered from a tornado traveling through several designated historic districts. Mount Vernon and Marion will report on the effect and community response to fires in the historic business areas. Linn County will report on its multiyear effort to document historic structures and areas in the entire rural area of the county, the first such county to attempt so extensive a survey.

The afternoon session will feature professional representatives of the Iowa Historic Preservation Office discussing various steps cities can take to prepare for any disasters that may have the high potential for damage or destruction of historic buildings. The recent disasters in the Corridor have impacted hundreds of structures, often altering familiar reminders of the community that were an important part of the city for generations. Such dramatic changes are not only an economic matter but also change forever the built environment of cities. The disappearance of historic landmarks changes our understanding of the past. Each of the morning reporting groups will discuss what they learned from their specific disasters.

The event will conclude at 3 p.m.  It is free, requires no registration and the public is welcome.
