Meeting: Preventing a Disaster Within a Disaster

  • 05/01/2012
  • 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM
  • Polk County Emergency Operations Center, 1907 Carpenter Ave. Des Moines

Life in the Midwest. It includes tornadoes, floods, heat waves and blizzards most commonly. Can your business take a leadership role in managing disaster volunteers during events like these? YES!

Please join us on Tuesday, May 1, at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for a behind-the-scenes look at the activities undertaken to protect people and property across Polk County and learn about the important role business and volunteers play.

You'll learn:

  • How and who leads the response to disasters in our community
  • Why volunteering before the disaster is key to success
  • How volunteers are used in a disaster

You'll hear from:

  • A.J. Mumm, Director, Polk County Emergency Management Agency, who will conduct an exercise that will temporarily activate the EOC to demonstrate how disasters are managed.
  • Dan Cataldi, State Response Officer, American Red Cross, who will discuss how volunteers are used in disaster response and define action you can take now.
  • Shirley Burgess, Volunteer Engagement Director, United Way of Central Iowa, who share the plan for managing "spontaneous volunteers" and discuss the leadership role your business can take.

Parking: Office entrance is on the east side of the building. Parking is available in the lot on the east side of the building and perimeters of the south lot.
